Welcome to Year 5's Class page

Year 5 have adopted the Gospel value & virtue of 'forgiveness' and 'generosity'.

Forgiveness - Matthew 6:12

Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

When we forgive, we should not forget and hold a grudge.

Generosity - Proverbs 11:17

Those who are generous are their own benefactors.

The generous person is the one who thinks of others, the one who can forgive without resentment.

Generosity does not make distinctions, generosity opens our heart and enriches us.

Welcome to Year 5

Miss Brown (Class Teacher) and Miss Kelly (Teaching Assistant)

We are looking forward to the busy, challenging and exciting year ahead. The children will study a wide and varied curriculum in the classroom, enhanced by many trips, which will truly make their learning come to life. These trips will include: becoming and Anglo-Saxon or Viking for the day at Tatton Hall Park; a trip to the Maritime Museum to enhance our history topic of the 'unsinkable' Titanic; a morning under the stars in the Planetarium, followed by an artistic afternoon in the Walker Art Gallery; and a scientific day a Brockholes Nature Reserve.

Throughout the year, the children will encounter many rewarding challenges as they begin their journey through Upper Key Stage 2. They will continue to work hard in all areas of the curriculum and grow more independent in their learning.

Thank you for working with us to support your child with their homework tasks and completing their daily reading. As always, if you have any concerns, or would simply like to talk about your child's learning, please do not hesitate to make an appointment via the school office.

I look forward to watching the children flourish and grow.

Homework Timetable

  • Daily reading of class novel: chapters or pages will be set by Miss Brown. The children should read every night, for at least 15 minutes; increasing fluency, speed and comprehension. I encourage you to still read with your child, even in Year 5 they still enjoy this quality time with you!
  • CGP Maths and English 10 minute workouts: Due in every Friday, to be marked together in class.
  • Spelling Frame: minimum of 2 tests per week or until your child achieves 100% on test. New words will be set weekly to coincide with words or spelling rule studied in school that week.
  • Read Theory or Book banded reading book: daily practise.
  • TimesTable Rockstars: Practise of multiplication tables and related division facts.

It is important in Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 and 6) that the children begin to develop independence when organising their home learning time, in preparation for High School.

History: Maritime Museum - a great way to finish our Titanic topic. The children have really enjoyed learning about this 'ship of dreams'.

World Book Day 2020: Book in a jar. Can you guess the book?

Art: We have been learning all about line drawings, focusing specifically on shading and perspective. Our learning accumulated in our fantastic drawings of the Titanic.

E-Safety Assembly: We have been learning how and why we need to keep our passwords safe online.

Advent: We thought about what it means to wait in expectation and how long a minute can be! We also discovered how teamwork makes the dream work.

Celtic Knots

DT: Designing and sewing sea creatures as part of our Awe and Wonder week.
