Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Curriculum Intent –

At St Gregory’s Catholic School, our MFL curriculum is designed to foster a love of language learning. As pupils progress through their language journey, they build confidence in both understanding and speaking Spanish by making meaningful connections with their prior knowledge.

Phonics, vocabulary, and grammar are introduced gradually and revisited regularly to ensure strong foundations and long-term retention. Lessons are carefully planned to be inclusive and engaging for all learners, incorporating a variety of strategies such as games, roleplay, repetition, and visual prompts to support understanding and enjoyment.

A key aim of our MFL provision is to broaden children’s cultural awareness. Through their learning, pupils are exposed not only to a new language but also to the rich traditions, food, climate, and customs of Spanish-speaking countries, enabling them to recognise and appreciate cultural diversity.

Our MFL journey begins in Year 3, where pupils are introduced to Spanish through engaging activities that develop their awareness of Spanish-speaking countries. They are taught to locate these countries on a map and begin exploring cultural elements.

We aim to develop pupils’ skills across four key areas:

  • Listening and responding

  • Speaking

  • Reading and responding

  • Writing

Our MFL curriculum is delivered through the Language Angels scheme, which is structured to match the progression of each year group. The resources align with the National Curriculum and are designed around the 12 Programmes of Study attainment targets.

We follow a clear, step-by-step approach, underpinned by the three key pillars of language learning: phonics, grammar, and vocabulary. As children move from Early Language to Intermediate and Progressive units, previously learned content is consistently revisited, reinforced, and built upon.

Language Angels includes embedded ‘stepping stones’ that support continuity, allowing pupils to regularly recycle prior knowledge as they develop more complex language skills. This thoughtful progression enables all pupils to flourish in their Spanish learning and prepares them for future language study with enthusiasm and confidence.
