Knowledge Organisers

Knowledge organisers (KOs) are powerful tools that help children learn, recall, and retain key information. They provide a clear overview of the most important facts, concepts, and vocabulary for a topic or subject. Here are some ways we use knowledge organisers in school, and some ways families may use them at home, to engage children in learning and support their education:

How We Use Knowledge Organisers in School

  1. Daily Practice

    • Teachers use KOs for quick quizzes and activities to help children recall important information and strengthen their memory; children will often quiz eachother, too.

  2. Interactive Learning

    • Lessons include fun activities like matching definitions, completing sentences, or creating visual aids using the information in the KO.

  3. Group Work

    • Students work together to present information from the KO in creative ways, like posters, songs/raps, or presentations.

  4. Review and Build

    • Teachers refer to the KO during lessons to show how topics connect and revisit key concepts throughout the term to help children retain their learning over time.

How Families Can Use Knowledge Organisers at Home

  1. Quiz Your Child

    • Use the KO to ask your child questions about what they’re learning. You could even turn this into a family quiz game for added fun!
  2. Talk About Learning

    • Discuss the topics on the KO during everyday moments, like mealtimes or car rides, to spark curiosity and make learning part of family life.
  3. Create Together

    • Encourage your child to make something based on the KO, like a drawing, a story, or even a short video explaining what they’ve learned.
  4. Use Technology

    • Help your child turn the KO into digital flashcards using apps like Quizlet or Anki, which can make learning more interactive.
  5. Teach the Family

    • Ask your child to "teach" you or a sibling something from the KO. Explaining what they know is a great way for them to deepen their understanding.
  6. Gamify Learning

    • Turn the KO into a game by creating trivia questions, board games, or word searches based on the information.
